A Correction
I often listen to NPR’s news programs in my daily commute. One of their shows – I think it’s All Things Considered – weekly features a segment where they read comments from listeners correcting inaccuracies in their reporting. I like that segment because it proves a certain integrity. While I’ve seen other news shows from time to time publicly admit to mistakes they’ve caught or others have pointed out, I can’t think of any news source that makes as much of an effort to clean up their screw-ups. In my experience traveling through the blogsphere corrections are even rarer (actually, I’m covering my ass saying “rarer” – I don’t think I’ve ever seen it).
Johnny Dollar has pointed out an inaccuracy in one of my posts where I said “His co-host, Mort Kondracke, says he’ll address Fred’s smear. …[He] never bothers.” He’s correct, I missed Mort’s comments which come later in the show. I’ve updated my post accordingly. I want to thank him because it makes my point far stronger.
Correction mentioned, you’d think that’d be the end of it. Unfortunately, there’s more. A lot more. Because Johnny decided to take things much farther and, as you can see, write an epistle accusing us here of dishonesty. Ironically, in making his point he coincidentally edits out parts of the video that don’t fit his case. Yep, this video clip is getting sliced and diced like a carrot in a Cuisinart.
To put this dead horse to rest, the recut video I’ve posted includes the original Fred Barnes “Defeatocrats” quip plus the entire segment from the point Mort begins his counterpoint – well, there is really not “counter” to it – until the entire segment ends, over 4 times the length of Johnny’s. No context is lost.
Now, Johnny Dollar’s criticisms of this site go on quite a bit. I’m not going to respond further to them in this blog entry. I deal with them here point by point. But his comment does offer a great opportunity for me to mention some important points I’ve been hoping to bring up.
First of all, I hope it isn’t lost on anyone that this is a site is dedicated to pointing out Fox News Channel bias. Personally, I see so much spin on “fair and balanced” Fox News it makes a complete mockery of their marketing slogan. I personally think it is by far the most biased ‘mainstream media’ outlet in America. My regret is Eyes On Fox lacks the sort of resources needed to accurately report it all.
That said, we’re not Fox News haters out to do some sort of hatchet job. My co-host and I haven’t discussed in any detail how to handle corrections. To be frank, I doubt few, if any, will merit a separate post like I’m doing here. But if we miss something in a clip, post bad data, have bad links, etc. we’ll make an honest attempt to correct them. It’s not our intent to sweep anything under the rug.
And hopefully how we’ve handled Johnny Dollar’s criticism points out we don’t censor comments or ignore criticism. The only comments we’ve deleted thus far are obvious spam (which reminds me I some more cleaning up to do). We have forums, thus far pretty inactive, that will be moderated (my co-host has at least 15 years experience moderating political forums) but never censored based upon one’s opinions.
As mentioned earlier, I’ve posted my response to Johnny’s accusations in the forums. He’s, of course, welcome to respond there if he wishes.
